Bridging Communities – Crochet Circle

Quinte Arts Council 36 Bridge St. E., Belleville

Whether you’re experienced with crochet, or just starting, please join us as we create crochet, learn new skills, and work together. These workshops are hosted by local artist, Emebet Belete.  Emebet’s current art project is Bridging Communities, a large-scale art installation where community members will create crochet, and cover the downtown Front Street Bridge in stripes, blocks and patterns!  Over the past year, she has taught and involved students in six area schools in the art of crochet. Open for youth and adults, experienced and beginners, individuals, families and friends!   Where: Quinte Art Council’s Cultural Hub. Abbamania + Bee Gees Night Fever at the Empire Theatre

Abbamania, an all Canadian cast, is the world’s number one production of Abba. The show consists of a remarkable live band that consists of studio musicians with violins and The Chicago Transit Horn section. With amazing vocals, look, sound and authentic costumes, you will believe you are watching the original Abba. They are the only Abba production to perform for Mama Mia. Hear the hits from “Waterloo, S.O.S to Dancing Queen”. Each song done note for note exactly like the record. Also, on the same show is Night Fever as the Bee Gees. With all the high harmonies and stage presence of the Bee Gees, they will be performing songs from “Jive Talking, To Love Somebody, Stayin’Alive to You Should Be Dancing” plus many more. Drumming Workshop

Join us for this 1-hour introduction to African drums such as djembe, kpanlogo, and gome. Learn technique, several parts to a song, and join in an ensemble that will shake the house! Along with playing, learn a bit about the history of the drums, how they are made, and the cultural significance of the music we will play.

Colours of Africa – Arts Workshop

Belleville Public Library 254 Pinnacle Street, Belleville, ON

Come and immerse yourself in a visual arts workshop with new and old friends. Belleville artist Emebet Belete has worked with mixed media collage throughout her career. In this workshop, she’ll introduce some of the techniques she uses in her work, and in her teaching. Participants will then have the opportunity to compose, design, and style their works on canvas using a variety of provided materials. For beginner or experienced artists, this workshop is accessible to all.

Ananse Storytelling with Nana Yaa Yeboaa

Oral tradition is key in Africa and elsewhere. Ananse stories originate in Ghana, West Africa. These are ancient stories that relate to people’s normal lives, and are as relevant now as when they were created. Normally stories are told around the fireside, but today we get a chance to sit down with an expert who can talk about and share Ananse stories in the beautiful Belleville library.
