Join us for this 1-hour introduction to African drums such as djembe, kpanlogo, and gome. Learn technique, several parts to a song, and join in an ensemble that will shake the house! Along with playing, learn a bit about the history of the drums, how they are made, and the cultural significance of the music we will play.
Come and immerse yourself in a visual arts workshop with new and old friends. Belleville artist Emebet Belete has worked with mixed media collage throughout her career. In this workshop, she’ll introduce some of the techniques she uses in her work, and in her teaching. Participants will then have the opportunity to compose, design, and style their works on canvas using a variety of provided materials. For beginner or experienced artists, this workshop is accessible to all.
Oral tradition is key in Africa and elsewhere. Ananse stories originate in Ghana, West Africa. These are ancient stories that relate to people’s normal lives, and are as relevant now as when they were created. Normally stories are told around the fireside, but today we get a chance to sit down with an expert who can talk about and share Ananse stories in the beautiful Belleville library.

Whether you’re experienced with crochet, or just starting, please join us as we create crochet, learn new skills, and work together. These workshops are hosted by local artist, Emebet Belete. Emebet’s current art project is Bridging Communities, a large-scale art installation where community members will create crochet, and cover the downtown Front Street Bridge in stripes, blocks and patterns! Over the past year, she has taught and involved students in six area schools in the art of crochet. Open for youth and adults, experienced and beginners, individuals, families and friends! He has played all over Ontario, and Quebec in several band combos including duos, trios, and quartets, and produced music for the Canada Weather Network and independent films. He has studied and continues to study classical guitar, piano and music theory and enjoys playing in many styles and genres. His set lists include music from Bach to Neil Diamond to U2. His Studio and Production company “DARK GREEN PRODUCTIONS” is in Frankford, Ontario. Dr. Isaac Akrong, the Founder and President of the African Arts Institute is connecting with the community at The Smokin’ Bistro (116 Pinnacle Street) on Saturday, February 17th, 2024. This past weekend, Dr. Akrong brought the Cirque Kalabanté performance to Bayside Secondary School where it received a standing ovation. Come get to know Isaac in person, enjoy live drumming and learn about all the awesome experiences he can bring to Belleville. All ages are welcome! Isaac is also looking to connect with local hunters for deer skin (for future drum-making workshops).
The Smokin’ 116 Bistro will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Dinner and a Show to raise funds for the Quinte West Youth Centre’s mentorship program. Doors open at 6pm with access to their full menu and live entertainment will begin at 7pm. You can expect to see performances from The Stirling J Birds, Bees Knees and Cousin Gibbard Suede.
