Sept. 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The City of Belleville will be hosting a special ceremony in Market Square beginning at 11 a.m. to honour this important event. The ceremony will include remarks from Chief R. Don Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, musical performances by singer, songwriter, educator and artist from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory Jennifer Brant and husband, Kieran Edwards, as well as a Sacred Fire and special presentation by Fire Keeper Greg Loft. An ASL interpreter will be present for the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange in honour of Orange Shirt Day. Those unable to attend the event are encouraged to recognize the day in other ways, by educating themselves, supporting local Indigenous organizations or causes, or participating in other events or activities. Belleville Public Library has developed a variety of displays, book and resource lists, and borrowing collections which will be available in various digital and physical formats for patrons interested in learning more about Indigenous history, Truth and Reconciliation, and the horrific legacy of the Residential Schools in Canada. The Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County have a number of resources online for those interested in learning more about local Indigenous history. More information on Truth and Reconciliation, including the Calls to Action, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Residential School History and more, can be found on the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s website. In addition to the Sept. 30 ceremony, the Belleville sign, Bridge Street Bridge and Fire Station #1 Memorial Garden will be lit in orange for the week. The flag at City Hall will also be lowered to half-staff as we remember and mourn all victims of the residential school system. “Reconciliation is a shared journey—one that requires open, respectful, and ongoing dialogue,” said Mayor Neil Ellis. “Education plays a vital role, but it must be paired with listening, understanding and meaningful connection. I encourage all residents to use this day not only to learn and reflect, but to engage in conversations that deepen our relationships and contribute to our collective path toward truth, healing and reconciliation.” For more information on the event, visit: Belleville.ca/TruthandRec.

Get ready for an evening of toe-tapping, heart-pounding, Rockabilly, Honky Tonk fun! Merging the sounds of rock n roll from the genres golden era with the countrypolitan sounds of the 1960s, at 20 years old Nicholas Campbell has gained himself a reputation as “the real deal”. Campbell first picked up the guitar at age 10 and was gigging by 11. Having found a fresh start during the pandemic, Nicholas began playing consistently with his band, The Meter Cheaters, who quickly rediscovered their groove as live shows began to become an option once again and they wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. The band worked to release Campbell’s debut album Livin’ and Other Western Ideas in 2021, combining elements of rockabilly, western swing, and good old-fashioned honky tonk. The result was a brisk, invigorating album that feels as fresh as it does familiar. In 2023 the band worked alongside James McKenty on the 2024 release of Gonna Have a Ball Tonight!, Campbell’s sophomore record; an eclectic collection of songs recorded live off the floor by McKenty. The band has enjoyed worldwide coverage and airplay since, spanning from across North America to Europe and beyond. 2024 also saw the release of He Said She Said, the first single from a third upcoming album. With the success of the first two albums, and new singles to come, Campbell and The Meter Cheaters have pursued a tour schedule of more than 195 shows a year, with highlights in 2025 being – multiple tours, working alongside Chris Spedding on “A Rockabilly Boogie”, a Tribute to Robert Gordon, opening for The Jim Cuddy Band, backing up recent JUNO award winners, Jake Vaadeland & The Sturgeon River Boys with Paul Brandt, and the anticipated release of Campbell’s 3rd album. If you haven’t seen this young phenom in person, you need to get here! Check out his videos on YouTube. Here’s a good one: Doors open: 6 pm

Join us for three engaging and entertaining one-act plays by local playwrights brought to life by some of the region’s finest actors. The Quinte Region is fast becoming a hotbed of play writing excellence…and we’ve got the proof. From bittersweet to poignant to laugh-out-loud funny, these three plays by Belleville playwrights are sure to have our audiences talking about them long after they’ve left the theatre. “Driving” by Steve Billinger is timely and masterfully written with dialogue as sharp as a knife. It’s an intense tour de force throwing two disparate men together in a sometimes uncomfortable conversation that neither one can escape from. “The Business Behind Us” by Matthew Sheahan is deceptively complex. With finely drawn characters, it’s both a modern morality tale and a mystery wrapped in a seemingly ordinary family story. “After Graduation” by Beth Milligan is short and sweet and as funny as…well…you’ll just have to see it. A master of writing plays that are fun for both actors and audiences, Beth has truly outdone herself with this one. Support local theatre and local writers. See all three plays for one price. That’s a bargain. Tickets are $25 on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/act-locally-tickets-1613028925939
