Connie Carson is a Quinte-area realtor who has written two books about Belleville: “Memories of Belleville” and “More Memories of Belleville” (available for sale at the Log Cabin).
She shared with us one of her favourite Belleville memories:
In 1957, a special movie day took place at the McCarthy Theatre in Belleville.
The Coca-Cola Company was hosting a marketing campaign giving kids under 14 a small bottle of pop and a free movie pass.
This event occurred during my birthday week, on a cold, slushy Saturday in late February.
Dressed in a long green coat, white earmuffs and warm winter boots, a reporter for The Intelligencer snapped my photo with the Coca-Cola mascot as I lined up for the show.
Fast forward 50 years to 2003, and I am sitting in my favourite booth at the new Cafe E Restaurant, a few doors from where McCarthy Theatre used to be.
I noticed a photo of the McCarthy Theatre showing a massive gang of kids waiting in a lineup.
Upon closer inspection, I spotted myself in the crowd with my fluffy white earmuffs, green winter coat and all!
It was a strange and weird feeling to come full circle and end up six decades later in the same spot.
