Spotlight: Obi’s Kitchen

Belleville’s Home of the “Secret Ingredients”

Adam Whan moved to the Quinte area from Ottawa in 2019 to be closer to family. After owning his own store in Ottawa, he wanted to start a new business in Belleville. The idea for Obi’s Kitchen started from Adam’s love for hot sauce; he even has a whole drawer in his fridge dedicated to it! His wife reminded him that not everyone likes hot sauce, so that may be a bit too specific. That’s when he decided to expand the offerings of his store to include something for everyone’s taste buds.

The store is named after their son, Owen Benjamin, whose initials are OB. With their last name, it sounds like Obi-Wan (shoutout to any Star Wars fans). When Adam was a child, his parents had a store named after him and his brother so it only made sense to name his store after his son.

At Obi’s Kitchen, you’ll find hot sauces, BBQ sauces, aiolis, olive oils, jams, chutneys, mustards and vinaigrettes… just to name a few! Over 90% of the products in the store are Canadian made, with a focus on high-quality, small-batch products. There’s even a display dedicated to local products that are made in the Bay of Quinte area and nearby!

Beyond sauces, there are other food items like olives, pickles, risotto, gluten-free pasta (including some made of oats or lentils and chickpeas), protein pancake and waffle mix and so many more exciting things to come! This all stems from his passion for cooking with high-quality, nutritious foods and finding new ways to get creative in the kitchen.

Adam is an impressive home chef, inspired by eating healthy foods and always trying to switch things up a little. He is constantly researching to find exciting new products, and testing them to ensure they are top quality. The photos above are just a few of his culinary creations using products that are sold in his store.

There’s no doubt that the pandemic has forced a lot of people to cook more often as they are spending more time at home. Adam says that this is the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen and try something new to enhance your home-cooked meals. You don’t need to relearn how to cook or try some complicated recipes, sometimes just adding a special or different sauce can really switch things up. If you’re not sure where to start, just ask for some recommendations!

Obi’s Kitchen is located in Century Place at 199 Front St along the Bridge St side. You can visit them in store or shop online.
